How will the placement of the rocks within the randomly selected cells be determined?

The placement of the rocks within the randomly selected cells will ultimately be determined by the judges before the beginning of the competition in order to fulfill the intent of the rules. There are several aspects of the rules that will need to be interpreted by the judges for the competition in order to facilitate fairness and implementation.

Competition Date Announcement

We are pleased to announce today that the 2008 Regolith Excavation Challenge will take place August 2 and 3, 2008 in the Engineering Plaza on the campus of California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo. We would like to thank the Cal Poly College of Engineering for their efforts to make this a reality.

In addition, we have decided to extend the "Early Bird" registration deadline back by two weeks to January 15. This is to allow extra time for teams that may have been waiting for this announcement before registering.

What will the lighting environment be around the sandbox?

The sandbox will be located under an event tent outdoors (similar to the configuration last year), so the lighting environment will be almost completely dependent on the weather. There isn't any way for us to define this any more specifically.

Is there a maximum height or other physical dimensions for the excavation hardware?

There will be a tent around the sandbox, so the maximum height will be defined by that. To be safe, excavators should be able to operate without any part rising more than 1.5 meters above the regolith surface. This should provide enough space for excavators while also allowing for the umbilical suspended from above. In order to determine the maximum footprint for the excavation hardware, please be sure to look at the rules on starting position and orientation.
